Description – Kapiti Rarama Washed Rind Cheese 160g

Kapiti Rarama Washed Rind Cheese 160g is a premium artisan cheese crafted in New Zealand using traditional cheesemaking techniques. It belongs to the washed rind category, a style known for developing complex aromas and soft, creamy textures through careful rind washing during maturation.

The rind of Rarama is gently washed during aging, encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria that contribute to its distinctive golden-orange hue and aromatic profile. This process results in a cheese that is both visually striking and flavour-rich.

The interior is soft, creamy, and smooth, becoming more decadent and spreadable as the cheese ripens. The texture contrasts beautifully with the slightly firmer rind, creating a balanced and luxurious eating experience.

The flavour profile is mild yet complex. It begins with gentle dairy sweetness and evolves into earthy, savoury notes as the cheese matures. The aroma is more pronounced than the flavour, offering an inviting richness without overwhelming intensity.

Kapiti Rarama is designed to be approachable compared to stronger washed rind cheeses, making it suitable for both new and experienced cheese enthusiasts.

It pairs exceptionally well with sweet and acidic accompaniments. Fresh pomegranate seeds are a recommended pairing, providing bright bursts of sweetness and acidity that balance the creamy, savoury cheese.

Other excellent pairings include fresh pears, apples, figs, honey, and fruit pastes such as quince or berry-based spreads. These enhance its natural creaminess while adding contrast.

On cheese boards, it works well with crusty bread, artisan crackers, and light crispbreads. Its soft texture makes it easy to spread, especially when served at room temperature.

It also pairs well with light white wines, sparkling wines, or fruity reds, which complement its creamy and slightly earthy profile.

Kapiti is one of New Zealand’s most respected dairy brands, known for producing high-quality artisan cheeses that showcase both traditional European techniques and local New Zealand milk excellence.

The 160g format is ideal for sharing, entertaining, or adding variety to a curated cheese board selection. It provides enough portion for multiple servings while remaining fresh and manageable.

As a washed rind cheese, Rarama develops greater complexity over time, making each tasting slightly different depending on its maturity.

Its balance of creaminess, mild earthiness, and approachable flavour makes it a versatile option for both casual enjoyment and gourmet entertaining.
